PRODUCTION GUIDELINES

Vegetables> Turnip> Planting

Land Preparation

The land should be thoroughly ploughed so that the clods do not interfere with the root development. Well decomposed FYM (15-20 t/ha) is mixed at the time of land preparation. Application of fresh undecomposed FYM should be avoided as it leads to forking of the fleshy roots.

Season of Planting

In the plains, the seeds of Asiatic types are sown from end of July to September and the European types from September-October to December. In hills, sowing is done from March to May.

Method of Planting

For regular supply of fresh and tender roots, the sowing should be staggered and done at 15 or 20 days interval. The seed rate of 3-4 kg/ha is recommended. Turnip is a usually grown on ridge to facilitate good root development. Sowing is done either by hand or by seed drills. The seeds are sometimes mixed with fine sand or ash to facilitate uniform sowing. The seeds of tropical varieties are sown at a spacing of 30 x 10 cm. pre-soaking irrigation 3-4 days prior to sowing enhances germination.
