Intercultural Operations
Thinning:
It is an important operation in
turnip cultivation as it promotes good root development.
When the plants are well established, they are thinned
out keeping a distance of 10-15 cm from plant to plant.
Weed Control:
Weeding and hoeing are necessary
to check the weed growth and provide soil aeration for
better growth and yield.
Two weddings during the growing
season of turnip are required to keep the growth of
weeds under check.
Earthing
up:
In turnip, the growing roots tend
to push out of the soil surface. Therefore, earthing
up is done to cover the exposed surface of the roots.
The first earthing-up should be done when the plants
are about 15-25 cm high. The second earthing up is often
done 25-30 days after sowing to cover up the tubers
properly.
